GUWAHATI, Dec 6 - Maligaon-headquartered Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has set a target to make all railway stations 100 per cent LED-lit by March 31, 2018.

It is a huge initiative to provide energy-efficient lighting which will eventually greatly help in conservation of environment. This will also lead to an annual saving of Rs 67 lakh per year in the energy bill of the NFR, said Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR Pranav Jyoti Sharma.

He said that there are 534 stations in the NFR zone and of them 101 stations have already been made 100 per cent LED-lit.

Work is on to make the rest of the stations fully LED-lit within the targeted period. Out of the 101 stations where LED lighting works have been completed, 35 are in Katihar Division, 14 are in Alipurduar Division, 30 are in Rangiya Division, 16 are in Lumding Division and six are in Tinsukia Division, he said.

In another initiative towards harvesting clean and green energy, NFR has already commissioned many rooftop solar power plants over railway establishments.

These plants are producing around 980 kW of power for official use. More such solar power plants are in the pipeline throughout NFR, said Sharma.
