All graft under Cong rule will be probed: BJP chief

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 9 - Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Amit Shah today said the BJP government would institute inquiries into all the cases of corruption that had taken place during the Congress rule in Assam. It would also initiate a CBI probe into all the chit fund-related cases.

Shah, who was addressing the media here today, was visibly upset when journalists repeatedly questioned him on the BJPs stand on the large-scale corruption attributed to Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was the most powerful Congress minister before he joined the BJP.

Being the Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi is largely answerable to the allegations of corruption. We will probe all corruption cases in Assam under the Congress government, he said.

Shah skirted the question when asked by this correspondent about the BJPs rationale behind Himanta Biswa Sarmas induction into the BJP, given that the BJP had persistently targeted Sarma as the most corrupt face of the Congress, and that the BJPs poll plank for the Assembly polls was corruption-free governance in Assam. An exasperated Shah even said that he would not answer questions concerning Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Earlier, asserting that the BJP would resolve the issue of Bangladeshi infiltration into Assam if it was voted to power in the State, Shah said the Congress government had all along protected the illegal migrants, besides throttling the pace of development in the State.

I appeal to the masses to give the BJP-led alliance a massive and decisive mandate in the Assembly polls. Our alliance represents the multi-social fabric of Assam and will be best-suited to address the issues of development and identity crisis of the indigenous populace.

He underscored the need for cooperation between India and Bangladesh for deporting the legally-detected illegal migrants from Assam. We will seal the Indo-Bangla border and rid the State of the problem of infiltration once and for all, he said.

Our aim goes beyond just forming a government in Assam. We have a vision for all-round development of Assam and will implement it. These polls are crucial for Assam and the North East as a whole. The peoples verdict will determine the course of the region for the next 25 years, the BJP president added.

He also asserted that the Assam Accord will be implemented in its letter and spirit.
