AKRSU calls bandh on October 2

By Correspondent

BONGAIGAON, Sept 27 - In protest against the lengthy process adopted by the Government on the ST demand of the six communities, the Pradip Ray faction of AKRSU has called a 24-hour Assam bandh on October 1 and a 36-hour chakka jam on October 3.

Addressing the media here on Monday, AKRSU president Ray said the contents to be included in modality by the expert committee were not discussed in the meeting between the leaders of six communities and the Government representative held in New Delhi on September 23.

So, Ray demanded that the expert committee display the contents of the modalities before the leaders of the six communities prior to its submission by October 15 so that they can put forward their opinions on the modalities.

We have to fight long for the ST status only because of our grouping with the other five communities, because some of them have flimsy base for the demand. Otherwise, we can have achieved this demand soon as we were accorded this status in 1996 by the then President of the country through a special ordinance, Ray said.
