DIBRUGARH, Sept 15 - The Krishak Mukti Sangram Sammittee (KMSS) leadership today said that the State Government had conspired to eliminate its leader Akhil Gogoi on September 13. The way Akhil Gogoi was lifted into the police vehicle from his residence in Golaghat is a testimony that the police had ulterior motives like the secret killing or a fake encounter, Vedanta Laskar, advisor to the peasant body and convenor of Gana Mukti Sangram, Assam, told newsmen here today.
Laskar said that Akhil was treated inhumanly by the police as a folded cloth was thrust into his mouth before being dragged into the police vehicle in haste. Akhil was only in his vest and lungi. Had the neighbours not been witness to this event, Akhil would have been a victim of secret killing or a fake encounter, he said.
At a juncture when KMSS has been carrying out mass Statewide protests against BJPs bid to provide citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis by bringing about the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, the arrest of Akhil Gogoi is condemnable. The police have branded him as anti national by slapping false charges against him. If his so called provocative speech tantamount to sedition, what about the other leaders who equally made confronting speeches. Even the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, some years back had suggested picking up hendang (traditional sword) to check the non Assamese from infiltrating into the State. Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also faces TADA cases. He was collecting money for the ULFA. Under these circumstances the government has no right to frame him as anti national by putting sedition charges against Akhil Gogoi, Laskar said.
The KMSS leader further said that under the Sarbananda Sonowal led BJP Government, Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had conducted arms training in some areas of the State under Durga Vahini. This was brought to the notice of the police. But the government has not registered any case against this RSS/BJP affiliates. Pradip Haloi, vice president of the district committee has also been slapped the same charges as Akhil Gogoi. He had only protested the arrest of Akhil Gogoi. Haloi has neither made any anti national speech nor attended the public event in Bamunbari. The police have falsely accused him, Laskar said.
Dharjya Konwar, the KMSS joint secretary quoted Supreme Courts ruling that only a violent revolution against the government attracted the charge of sedition. By arresting, the BJP and the RSS are only trying to suppress the voice of the people. If the rights of the indigenous people need to be protected, there is the need to uproot the BJP and the RSS from the State, he said.
