GUWAHATI, Feb 28 The Guwahati Mati Pattakaran Sangram Samity on Thursday demanded the arrest of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti president Akhil Gogoi, accusing him of instigating the self-immolation by Pranab Boro on February 24.
The Samity, in a statement, said that Akhil has been emotionally instigating the pattaless people and thereby has misled the movement for land patta. It needs to be mentioned here that the Samity since 2002 has been demanding land patta and taking up various agitational programmes to intensify its demand. But since 2011, Akhil Gogoi, taking advantage of the eviction on the hills by the government, has taken up the issue and turned the democratic movement into a violent one, said the Samity adding Akhil has compelled many to lay down their lives to gain cheap popularity. The Samity further said that Akhil has been using the gullible people as his shield.
We have been warning Akhil not to emotionally instigate the people and push them to death. But Akhil has ignored our warnings, said the Samity appealing to the Chief Minister to do the needful to arrest Akhil at the earliest. The Samity wondered why Tarun Gogoi has been silent on the drama that Akhil keeps enacting in the name of peoples movement. It insisted that the government take the steps to prevent repetition of such incidents.
Meanwhile, the Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti (MASS), in a petition to the Assam Human Rights Commission has sought appropriate legal and deterrent action against the alleged negligent activities on the part of the government in this case. It has also requested the Commission to direct the government to provide adequate compensation to the family of the victim.
