By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 9 Voluntary organisation Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) today alleged that about two thousand of its members, including its secretary Akhil Gogoi, were brutally beaten up and arrested by the police at Nazira today. The KMSS members were staging a dharna in front of the SDOs office in support of their demands.

The KMSS said in a press release that it had secured the permission of the SDO for taking out a procession from the Nazira Natya Mandir and then to stage the demonstration in front of his office. They were told by an Executive Magistrate that the SDO would receive their memorandum personally.

But later on, they were asked to disperse without the SDO receiving the memorandum. The police personnel pounced upon them brutally and Akhil Gogoi and about two thousand members of the KMSS were arrested. They were released around 5 pm, said the KMSS in its press release.

The demands in support of which the KMSS members staged the demonstration today, include the ones for land patta to the forest dwellers, steps to check price rise, checking corruption in NREGA and Public Distribution System and shelving all the mega dam projects proposed in the NE region.
