Akhil Gogoi assaulted in Nalbari

NALBARI,July 6 � General secretary of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) Akhil Gogoi who came to take stock of flood devastation in Nalbari district was attacked by a group of Congress workers at Purni village under Dharmapur LAC today.

The KMSS leader sustained injuries on the forehead and lower back as the attackers beat him up with bamboo lathis. He managed to escape from the spot and arrived at the Nalbari Sadar Police Station bleeding. The police immediately arranged for his medical treatment at Nalbari Swahid Mukunda Kakati Civil Hospital.

Meanwhile, Gogoi lodged an FIR against Congress leaders Ratul Patowary, president of Dharmapur LAC Youth Congress Committee and Congress workers Tapan Barman, Ratul Ali, Khalilur Rahman, Bhuban Deka and Raju Barman.

Talking to mediapersons at Nalbari Sadar Police Station, Gogoi said that Agriculture Minister Nilamoni Sen Deka is also behind the conspiracy of the attack. The Youth Congress leaders attacked him at the instance of Nilamoni Sen Deka, he alleged.

However the KMSS leader has refused to leave Nalbari district till the arrest of the culprits. He also alleged that the Nalbari police had miserably failed to provide security to him.

The attackers also snatched away two cameras of scribe Ajit Barman. Meanwhile, the Nalbari district unit of KMSS also called a dawn-to-dusk Nalbari district bandh on July 7.

Our Staff Reporter adds in Guwahati: The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) on Friday strongly condemned the assault on its general secretary Akhil Gogoi in Nalbari district allegedly by members of Youth Congress and demanded immediate arrest of the attackers.

The KMSS has warned that it would launch a statewide agitation and this will continue until the attackers are arrested.

It needs to be mentioned here that the KMSS members staged a protest demonstration on the bank of the Dighalipukhuri demanding justice in this connection. The protesters were picked up by the police and later released.

The KMSS has alleged that the Purni incident was the outcome of the conspiracy hatched by Agriculture Minister Nilamoni Sen Deka and demanded resignation of the minister.
