Akademi awards presented to 28 Manipur artistes

IMPHAL, Feb 6 - Twenty-eight persons were conferred the Akademi Lifetime Achievement Award, Akademi Awards and Akademi Young Talent Award 2015 for their outstanding contribution in their respective fields of dance, music, theatre, Shumang Leela, Guraleela, Wari Leeba, Arangpham, tribal culture, literature, fine arts, mime and Thang-Ta here on Wednesday.

Hijam Gourasing Singh was conferred the Akademi Lifetime Achievement Award which carries a citation and a cheque for Rs 3 lakh, while Akademi Fellow was conferred on Khangembam Mangi Singh and Nameirakpam Ongbi Ibemni Devi which carries a citation and cheque for Rs 1 lakh each.

The Akademi Award was conferred on 19 exponents (citation and Rs 50,000 each) and the Akademi Young Talent Award carrying citation and a cheque for Rs 25,000 each on six others.

After presenting the awards, Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla said that the beauty and popularity of Manipuri culture has not diminished over the centuries due to the hard work and sincere efforts of many illustrious gurus, exponents and practitioners.

Dr Heptulla is the Chairperson of the Manipur State Kala Akademi which was established in 1972 for the preservation and promotion of music, dance, theatre and other forms of arts, literature and fine arts.
