AJYCP unit demands early construction of Dirak-Sumani dyke

By Correspondent

DOOMDOOMA, May 18 - The Tinsukia district committee of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), in association with the Noa-Dihing Bandh Suraksha Sangram Samity and the local public, today staged a sit-in demonstration at Kakopothar, in support of the demand for early construction of the Dirak-Sumani dyke along the Noa-Dihing river under the Doomdooma Revenue Circle of Tinsukia district. The youth student body also called for scientific construction of the embankment for effective solution of the twin problems of flood and erosion.

Later, the protesters sent separate memoranda to the Chief Minister, the Water Resources Minister, the Tinsukia DC and local MLA Bolin Chetia. The memoranda were jointly signed by Tinsukia AJYCP president Surajit Moran, its acting secretary Kanchan Bora, Noa-Dihing Bandh Suraksha Sangram Samity president Nabajyoti Gogoi and its secretary, Binod Dohutia. On March 29, 1992, the Noa-Dihing river had breached the Dirak-Sumani dyke, inundating 82 revenue villages under the Doomdooma Revenue Circle along with several other neighbouring villages. It has not been rebuilt since.
