AJYCP stir against LSHEP in N Lakhimpur

By Correspondent

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Aug 13 - The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has announced a series of protest programmes against the starting of work of Lower Subansiri Hydro Electrical Plant (LSHEP) at Gerukamukh by the National Hydroelectrical Power Corporation (NHPC).

The student body has been on a hundred hours blockade of construction goods for the dam work at Khelmati in North Lakhimpur against the river dam power plant project since Sunday as a part of its renewed calls for agitation. Speaking to the media, Saurabh Das of AJYCP categorically stated that the organisation wont allow the construction of the hydropower plant dam on Subansiri. He also said that there was no alternative to agitation in the wake of the NGTs nod to the LSHEP recently. The AJYCP has already sent its letter of opposition over the dam work to the Prime Minister after taking part in a sit-on demonstration in North Lakhimpur and blocking the NH-15.

It may be recalled that the National Green Tribunal recently dismissed petitions seeking reconstitution of a six-member expert committee that anti-dam organisations in Assam claimed were biased towards environment-threatening big dams. The petition was filed by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) leader Tularam Gogoi, and president of NGO, Assam Public Works Abhijit Sarma. Construction works at Gerukamukh for the 2000 MW LSHEP dam over Subansiri has been halted since December 2011 following massive protests.
