AJYCP raps Centre for trying to pass Bill in RS

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Feb 12 - Reacting sharply to the Union governments move to get the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, passed in Rajya Sabha today, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) alleged that the Narendra Modi-led government has deliberately deferred the bill for tomorrow.

The youth body alleged that the government was adopting cheap tactics to get the bill passed, sidelining all the democratic means and totally ignoring the ongoing protests in the North East.

The youth body today staged demonstrations throughout the State protesting against bringing the bill in Rajya Sabha. Highways were blocked for an hour during the protests. In Guwahati, too, a road blockade was staged at Chandmari by the Guwahati committee of the organisation.

The protesters burned effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi while shouting slogans against the government.

The bill was passed in Lok Sabha on January 8 because the BJP has sufficient strength there. However, in Rajya Sabha, where the party does not have the numbers in its favour, it is trying to bring more MPs in its favour through horse trading. There cannot be a more shameful act in a democratic country, Parishad president in-charge Hemen Chakrabarty and general secretary Palash Changmai said.

Announcing a strong movement against the bill in the days to come, they said road blockades would be staged again tomorrow throughout the State and AJYCP members would stage protests in front of the DCs office in every district.
