By Correspondent

TINSUKIA, Feb 13 The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) today organised a big rally at Kakopathar against mega dams.

The rally was taken out from the Kakopathar Rajahuwa Khelpathar and the protest meeting was held on NH-52 in front of the Kakopathar Sangskritik Krishti Sangha blocking the highway for three hours from 12.30 pm to 3.30 pm.

The meeting was attended by a large number of people including office-bearers of various organisations and prominent citizens of

the area.

Speaking on the dangers of the big dams, the speakers stated that the Government of India has already approved seven big dams to be built in Lohit valley to produce 8770 megawatts of electricity and in Siang and Debang 29 big dams would be built to produce 25,000 MW of electricity. All these 36 big dams would erase Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts from the map of the world in a single mishap in any one of these big dams, they said.

Moreover, the speakers said the Lohit lower dam-way, work on which had already started at 800-metre upstream of Parashuram Kunda, would change the rich biodiversity of the entire area including that of Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts.

The dam-way of 160 metres height would endanger the lives and property of the people of these two districts in case of mishap, the said. The speakers urged the Assam Government to approach the Central Government to abandon the idea of big dams and instead to go for small dams. They also threatened that the Arunachal Government should abandon the projects for the safety and security of the people of neighboring Assam.

They further appealed to the people of Assam to raise their voices against these big dams for the sake of very existence of Assam.
