AJYCP blockade enters fourth day

By Correspondent

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Oct 13 - The blockade of supply of materials for the Lower Subansiri Hydro Electrical Power plant at Gerukamukh by the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) entered the fourth day today, following the incident of burning a truck by unknown miscreants on October 8 and the subsequent arrest of five persons.

The AJYCP declared a week-long agitational programme against the construction of the stalled LSHEP plant work at Gerukamukh by the NHPC, following the burning of the truck which was carrying machinery and other materials meant for the LSHEP plant. The arrest of five persons by the police on suspicion for the truck burning incident has created a furore in Lakhimpur district and the AJYCP's blockade is a reaction of the public anger.

On Friday, two trucks carrying machinery for the LSHEP at Gerukamukh were stopped by the AASU, AJYCP, TMPK, ATASU etc., at Gogamukh. But the trucks were later recovered from the crowd as police and paramilitary forces stormed the area arresting hundreds of agitating members of AASU, AJYCP, TMPK and others. Since then the situation has remained volatile in Lakhimpur with organisations like the KMSS and others undertaking a mass agitation against the start of work at the LSHEP site at Gogamukh.
