AJP, ASDC join hands to contest polls

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 18 - The newly formed Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), as part of its move to unite all regional political forces, on Sunday reached a consensus with the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) to unitedly contest the forthcoming Legislative Assembly election.

As part of the consensus, the ASDC will field candidates in Howraghat, Bokajan, Diphu, Baithalangso and Haflong Legislative Assembly Constituencies with the support of the AJP.

After a meeting held on Sunday, leaders of both the parties addressed a joint press conference at the AJP head office at Ambari and made the announcement.

Today, we have come into a consensus to unitedly contest the next Legislative Assembly election, so that we will be able to defeat both the BJP and the Congress in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao regions. Our aim is to stop the invasion of national political forces in this land, ASDC president Chandrakanta Terang said at the press meet.

He said that the aim of the consensus was not to contest the election but to work unitedly for the cause and interests of the Assamese people. He also spoke about ensuring the rights of non-Karbi people residing in Karbi Anglong through this consensus.

Later, talking to The Assam Tribune, Terang said that in the last part of November, his party will hold a conference to finalise the strategy about the alliance with the AJP.

Addressing the press conference, AJP coordinator Adip Phukan said the party will finalise the strategy to move forward with the alliance when the AJP gets full-fledged shape.

The AJP is working to come into a consensus with all tribal political forces of Assam to form a grand alliance of regional political forces, Phukan said.
