Ajmal to contest from Dhubri

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, March 11 The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) announced the names of its first two candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls this evening, with party supremo and sitting MP from Dhubri Badruddin Ajmal re-nominated from the same constituency and Radheshyam Biswas from Karimganj.

The decision was taken during a marathon meeting of the partys executive committee here, which is continuing till the filing of this report.

The AIUDF general secretary (Organization) said a few more announcements could be expected late tonight or tomorrow morning.

Islam said the party will allot Lok Sabha tickets to candidates from diverse communities and ethnic groups including Assamese, Hindu Bengali, tea tribe, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, besides minorities.

You just wait for our final list. You will find we have candidates representing the entire gamut of Assams demography. Our party does not represent only one community, he said.

AIUDF, which has one MP in the current Lok Sabha and 18 MLAs in the Legislative Assembly, generally has an image of being a party representing only a section of the minority community, a tag it has for long tried to dispel.

AIUDF will contest from 10 out of the 14 constituencies in Assam Dhubri, Barpeta, Guwahati, Mangaldai, Nagaon, Koliabor, Lakhimpur, Silchar, Karimganj and Tezpur. The party held meetings of its executive committee today.
