Ajit Barua passes away

GUWAHATI, April 3 � Noted Assamese poet, Ajit Barua died at his Jorpukhuripar Naojan Road residence here around 8.15 pm today. He was 89. Barua, who was hospitalised due to pneumonia, was released from the hospital about 12 days back. However, the weakness due to the ailment proved to be fatal for him, family sources said.

Born in 1926, Barua, a former senior IAS officer, who retired as the Commissioner of the Lower Assam Division about 30 years back, is known for the intellectual intensity of his poems. He skilfully applied the Eliotean technique in poetry. His poem Jengrai created quite a sensation during the 1960s.

His works include Padya Aru Gan, Brahmaputra Ityadi Padya and Sahityar Bishaye.

Barua, who had a command over French, also translated Albert Camus novel The Plague and his play Les Justes from French into Assamese.

He was a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award, Assam Valley Literary Award and the Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad Award, among others, for his contribution to literature.

His son Porjanya (Babi) Barua predeceased him in 2009. The poet left behind a daughter and a daughter-in-law.

His last rites will be performed tomorrow at the Navagraha cremation ground here, family sources said.
