Ajanta Neog pays surprise visit to Silchar

By CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR, July 3 Ajanta Neog, PWD and Urban Development Minister recently paid a surprise visit here. Except for the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, no other official had prior information about her visit. Security personnel were told that a VIP was coming, but the name was kept a closely guarded secret.

Neog went straight to some places accompanied by HK Dev Mahanta, Deputy Commissioner of Cachar to see the condition of the roads within the district. She was astonished to see the pathetic condition of the roads.

In the evening she convened a meeting with PWD officials and entrusted them with specific tasks. Neog assured that the roads from Tarapur to Sadarghat bridge and Capital Point to Holy Cross School would be constructed with cement.

Neog also held a meeting with Silchar municipality officials. Neog said that present happenings in the municipality would not be entertained. The board should stand independently. Silchar Municipal Board tax collector Indrajit Dutta Choudhury informed the Minister that the monthly expenditure for various civic services was Rs 23 lakh, whereas the revenue collection was Rs 12 lakh.

A visibly irritated Neog asked the SMB chairperson as well as Silchar MLA Susmita Dev to enhance the water tax from Rs 70 to Rs 100 per month. She also advised the ward commissioners to exert themselves for enhancing the quantum of tax collection.

She even warned that if laxity in revenue collection is detected, then services will be curtailed accordingly.
