AIUDF opposes visa plan for Bangladeshis

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 24 The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has opposed any proposal by the Union government to implement a visa-free regime for Bangladeshis to visit India.

AIUDF general secretary (Organization) Aminul Islam said in a communiqu that while the BJP-led NDA governments initiative to strengthen bilateral relations with the neighbouring country is welcome, the concerns of people of Assam should also be respected and taken into account.

He said the issue of illegal immigration is a sensitive and emotional one for the State and Assam has already witnessed a lot of politicking on the issue, including in the matter of D-voters and setting up of detention camps.

Islam said that his party will never support any effort to sacrifice the Assam Accord for the sake of improving ties with Bangladesh and said both the Centre and the State government should formulate a consensus with all political parties and other stakeholders before undertaking any such measures.
