AIR Shillong pays tributes to Bhupen Hazarika

SHILLONG, March 26 � All India Radio, Shillong along with North Eastern Service of AIR held a musical soiree to let the audience re-invent the taste of songs penned, composed and sung by late Dr Bhupen Hazarika here on Saturday last, a Press release said.

Meghalaya Governor RS Mooshahary attended the occasion as chief guest. Addressing the audience, Mooshahary recalled Dr Bhupen Hazarika as a musician of the soil, each of his composition had a message towards humanity and brotherhood.

Terming him an extra ordinary musician of our time, the Governor said, �Dr Hazarika�s compositions were deeply ingrained with the real flavour of nature as well�. His songs depicting the might and generosity of the Brahmaputra will always teach us to protect the nature God.

Keynote address was delivered by Dr Helen Giri, Padma shree awardee in the field of art and culture and top artist of AIR, Shillong. She reminisced her close association with the late singer and recalled the moment when during his tenure as the Chairman of Sangeet Natak Academy, Dr Hazarika tried to set precedent for introducing innovative methods for prosperity of music as a whole.

Dr Hazarika was very close to the children and never lost any chance to show his affection towards them. Station Director of AIR Shillong Nariman Shadap welcomed the gathering. The U Soso Tham Auditorium with a capacity of 800 plus, was filled to full.

Music lovers from all over the city and a few from Assam as well attended the programme. Noted Assamese singer Dr Anima Choudhury, an A grade artist of AIR presented the song �Asom amar rupohi�. Samar Hazarika, younger brother of late Bhupen Hazrika performed the ever popular Assamese number �Manuhe manuhor babe�� followed by the song ingrained deep in the psyche of Shillongites �Shillongore Monalisa Lyngdoh�. Anju Devi and Pulak Bannerjee also presented several popular songs of late Hazarika.She assured that the RBI would make efforts to re-visit the area in order to promote banking facilities. Hundreds of villagers, panchayat leaders and bank officers from various banking institutes took part in the programme.
