Aikya lauded for efforts to spread unity message

SIVASAGAR, April 16 - Aikya, a premier socio-cultural organisation of Sivasagar observed their special Bihu function and �koni-juj� competition inaugurating the Rongali Bihu celebrations in the town in Muktinath Chariali, Sivasagar on April 14 with a daylong programme.

Abhijit Boruah, ADC, Sivasagar inaugurated the �koni-juj� competition and lauded Aikya for the consistent effort to spread the message of unity through Bihu.

SP Subudh Sonowal in his speech said that �koni-juj� (egg-fight) was a tradition among the peasants to predict a result through the contest as to who would make the best harvest that year. Jehiruddin Ahmed, an environment worker and Mira Sinha, sports organiser, Sofiur Rahman, a police officer, Ananya Gogoi, promising archer of the State, Manoj Kr Gogoi, reporter and Rajiv Hazarika, paraglider were felicitated by Aikya in the function.

The cultural function later in the evening was enjoyed by thousands who were enthralled by singing star Priyanka Bharali.

Dr Soumerjyoti Mahanta, president Bihu committee hoisted the flag in the morning. Anamuddin Ahmed, executive president, addressing the meeting said that Rongali Bihu is in essence a truly secular and non-religious festival. Dhananjoy Saikia, president Aikya, thanked the people of Sivasagar town for supporting the cause of people�s unity through Aikya Bihu for the last 24 years.
