By Correspondent

DHUBRI, Aug 9 - Over 1,000 farmers from all over the Dhubri district today took out a rally from the railway station to the Deputy Commissioners office to fulfil their long pending demands.

The farmers under the banner of All India Kishan Sabha (AIKS) took out the rally and Jail Bharo agitational programme. A section of protesters later blocked the main road, for which they were detained. They shouted slogans demanding implementation of recommendations by Swaminathan Commission. They also demanded providing lands to landless cultivators and pensions for the farmers.

Despite repeated pleas, the authorities concerned have turned a blind eye. We want a permanent solution to our problems, said Sopikul Rahman, district secretary of AIKS. He also appealed to the government to accord priority to the agriculture sector. If we want our country to be prosperous, agriculture development is a must, he claimed.

They, however, alleged that the BJP-led government has neglected the agriculture sector which is unfortunate at this juncture. The detained farmers were released later.
