Aids, implants distributed to differently abled in Manipur

IMPHAL, March 24 - Prime Minister Narendra Modi has instructed every Union minister to visit the North Eastern States every three months.

Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Krishan Pal Gurjar said this while addressing a function held to distribute free aids and assistive devices at the Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium here today.

Informing that the Government has already increased reservation for persons with disabilities in employment from 3 per cent to 4 per cent and in education from 5 per cent to 7 per cent, Gurjar said a new welfare scheme for mute and deaf children would be launched to provide financial assistance of Rs 6 lakh. A scheme for persons above 60 years of age belonging to BPL families has also been launched.

Around 11,000 deaf and mute children were provided hearing aids and other implants. The NDA Government has recognised 21 types of disabilities against the previous Government�s seven types, he added. A universal identity card will be provided to persons with disabilities soon and such cards will be valid throughout the country to avail of facilities or benefits under any scheme for differently-abled persons.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh said around 3,000 people with 80 per cent or more disabilities have been provided caregiver allowances/maintenance grants of Rs 1,500 per month under the �Chief Ministergi Sotharabasingi Tengbang� scheme.

Besides, around 70,000 people have been enrolled under the �Chief Ministergi Hakshelgi Tengbang,� a health scheme which won the award for the country�s best implemented public health programme, he added.
