AICC steps up bid to defuse crisis

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, June 3 The All India Congress Committee (AICC) is exploring all possibilities to defuse the crisis in the Assam Congress Legislature Party (ACLP).

AICC sources said that a series of meetings were held in the national capital today in an attempt to hammer out a solution to the ongoing crisis. Two meetings were held today at the residence of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.

The first meeting was attended by Rahul Gandhi, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, AICC general secretary in charge of Assam CP Joshi, and senior leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ahmed Patel. Interestingly, Priyanka Gandhi was also present in the meeting.

The second round of meeting, held this evening, was attended by APCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita.

Though the participants in the meeting were tight-lipped about the outcome, AICC sources said that various possibilities were explored in the meetings to defuse the crisis. One option was holding a meeting of the ACLP, which was reportedly rejected by the Chief Minister. Changing Gogois team of ministers was another option discussed, while, Gogoi reportedly suggested giving the APCC presidents post to Rockybul Hussain. However, the meetings remained inconclusive.

It may be mentioned here that the three-member committee constituted by Congress president Sonia Gandhi already listened to the views of the dissidents and the loyalists of Gogoi, and efforts are on to find a solution acceptable to both the groups.
