AICC observer calls on church body leader

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 29 - All India Congress Committee (Minority Department) observer for Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram Rejaul Karim Laskar today met the general secretary of the Council of Baptist Churches in North East India (CBCNEI) Rev Dr Solomon Rongpi at the office of the CBCNEI here.

Laskar and Rev Dr Rongpi discussed a number of issues during the occasion.

Laskar said that the Constitution of India describes India as a secular country and emphasised the need to protect secularism. He said the government is duty bound under the Constitution to treat every religion equally.

He added that the right to freedom of religion, including the right to freely profess, practise and propagate religion, granted by the Constitution of India must be protected from undue encroachment.

Laskar said that unity in diversity is Indias strength and any attempt to impose uniformity will be contrary to Indias pluralist ethos.
