AHRC takes up Goalpara incident

GUWAHATI, May 2 � Taking suo moto cognizance of the news published in local dailies and telecast in the electronic media on April 30 relating to the incident of violence at Moliapathar under Goalpara police station on April 29, a division bench of the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has initiated a case and issued notice to the Chief Secretary of Assam to conduct an inclusive inquiry into the incident.

The inquiry has to be conducted by an Additional Chief Secretary of�the State and the report has to be submitted within 45 days of receipt of the notice, a division bench of the AHRC comprising its Chairperson Dr Justice AH Saikia and Member Tarun Phookan, directed.

The incident in Goalpara district witnessed pelting of stones, etc., at the security forces and causing of damage to some Government vehicles of the police and the Magistrates by the people on rampage, followed by retaliatory firing by the police. Three persons died in the violence.
