AHRC notice to Govt on Assam Bhawan inaction

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 20 - The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) took suo-motu cognizance of a news published in a city-based vernacular news daily dated April 18, reporting about the alleged neglect and inaction on the part of the authority of the Assam Bhawan in New Delhi in extending necessary assistance to Delhi Police that reportedly recovered a helpless and hapless Assamese girl aged 16/17 years, found wandering near the Fire Brigade Station at Moti Nagar, New Delhi on April 17 morning.

In its order in AHRC case No. 1654/0/16-17, a division bench of the Commission, comprising Dr Justice Aftab H Saikia, Chairperson and Tarun Phookan, Member directed to issue notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Assam, to cause an effective inquiry to be conducted into the aforesaid allegation so as to fix responsibility on the official/staff of Assam Bhawan, New Delhi, for taking appropriate punitive action against the delinquent official/staff concerned, and submit the report thereof within 30 days of receipt of the notice.

It was alleged that Robin Hiru, Nodal Officer of the Delhi Police, in-charge of the North East, phoned the Assam Bhawan in New Delhi after finding it difficult to converse with the girl who could not speak Hindi, seeking help, only to be refused by some lady attendant of the Bhawan from its reception counter on the plea that no help could be extended from the Assam Bhawan authority as it was a Sunday.
