Ahom body slams Himanta

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Aug 24 - Members of Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad today burnt the effigy of Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at the Chowkidinghee intersection here in protest against the Governments move to open colleges in the name of Deendayal Upadhyaya on the one hand, and for allegedly making derogatory comments against educationist and social scientist Dr Hiren Gohain on the other.

Rana Ranjan Gogoi, general secretary of Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Dibrugarh district, said that till date the Government has not taken any step to establish educational institutions in the name of Sukapha and other Assamese icons and doyens who have made immense contributions towards the cause of greater Assam. But it is now trying to open colleges in the name of Deendayal Upadhyaya whose contributions to the State are nil. We firmly stand opposed to the opening of educational institutions in the name of Deendayal Upadhyaya, said Gogoi.

The Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad also criticised the Education Minister for making insulting comments against Dr Hiren Gohain, on whom the organisation had earlier conferred the Mahabir Lachit Borphukan Award for his immense contributions towards Assamese society and culture.

Insulting Dr Gohain is insulting our organisation and the entire Ahom community. This has really hurt us and we cannot take it lightly, said Rana Ranjan Gogoi.
