AGSU opposes police commissionerate in city

GUWAHATI, Jan 22 � A delegation from the All Guwahati Students� Union (AGSU) today met Kamrup Metro DC Ashutosh Agnihotri and submitted a memorandum through him to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi opposing any plan to set up a police commissionerate in the city.

In the memorandum, the student organisation demanded strengthening of the existing system with two SPs and one SSP by use of latest technology.

It said that giving magisterial power to the police by forming commissionerate system would be a big blow to democracy.

AGSU said that the police has failed in controlling crime, traffic menace and in providing security to women and added that the force lacks necessary manpower to control the situation.
