IMPHAL, Aug 28 - The Manipur Government has suspended the Assistant Fertilizer Officer of the State Agriculture department, sources said today. Though the suspension order issued by Joint Secretary of the Agriculture department Laltanpuii Vanchhong did not mention any details, it said disciplinary proceedings against K Kulabidhu, Assistant Fertilizer Officer, Directorate of Agriculture, Manipur, are contemplated.

However, reports available here suggest that the development could be related to the State Governments failure to deliver urea to needy farmers at subsidised rates.

The suspension order also stated that Kulabidhu shall not leave Imphal during the period of his suspension without obtaining permission of the authority concerned.

Meanwhile, the United Peoples Front, a civil society organisation, has threatened to launch an agitation along with farmers of the State if the Agriculture department fails to distribute fertilisers within a week.

On August 25, irate farmers stormed the Agriculture Department office in Imphal, demanding supply of urea.
