AGP warns Centre on migrants issue

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 19 The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has warned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Central Government not to grant citizenship to the illegal migrants from Bangladesh.

In a statement here, the regional party has resented the letter written by the Union Home Secretary to his Bangladesh counterpart on the issue. The letter said that the Indian Government has accepted the proposal for granting free visas to the illegal Bangla migrants and Indian citizenship to the Bangla refugees.

The AGP would launch a vigorous agitation to resist all such efforts of the BJP-led Government at the Centre, the party said and alleged that the BJP has been playing with the sentiments of the people of Assam on the issue of illegal migrants.

It has also condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi for auctioning the gifts presented by the people of Assam to him during his visit to the state. This has exposed the real character of the BJP so far as respecting the sentiments of the people of Assam is concerned, said the regional party.
