AGP rejects Mahantas resignation offer

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 15 The general house of the regional Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today turned down the plea of its president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta to relieve him of the post.

However, it granted Mahantas request to allow party working president Atul Bora to officiate as the party president till the next general conference of the party on grounds that he (Mahanta) is not keeping well and to save the party from a constitutional crisis arising out of it.

AGP publicity secretary Manoj Saikia told this newspaper that the general house of the party at its meeting today condemned the failure of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to fulfill its pledges made to the people of the State on various issues, particularly on the issues concerning the big dams and the foreign nationals.

The general house decided to launch an agitation very soon in protest against the failure of the BJP to keep its promises on these issues.

It also condemned the hike in the prices of essential commodities, petrol and diesel and hike in the rail fares effected by the BJP-led Central Government, alleging that the BJP has been siding with big capital deceiving the common people.
