AGP parleys on to resolve crisis

GUWAHATI, July 5 � There are attempts on the part of the leaders of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) to save the party from the quagmire it is presently in following the offers of resignation by 16 of its central executive committee members from their party posts in the wake of the party�s dismal performance in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections.

While the party president is having parleys at the party headquarters here with those who have offered to resign from their party posts demanding a total reformation in the party, for the past about three days, closed door meetings are also held by the senior party leaders to find out a solution to the present crisis at some other places too.

Former working president of the party and presently leader of the AGP Legislature Party (AGPLP) Phani Bhusan Chowdhury invited the senior leaders of the party, including those who have offered to quit their party posts, to sort out the differences at a city hotel last night.

Choudhury told this newspaper that the discussion was cordial, positive and encouraging. But since it remained inconclusive, it is decided that another meeting would be held by the senior leaders of the party on the issue shortly.

Around 23 leaders, including former presidents of the party Chandra Mohan Patowary and Thaneswar Boro, Rajya Sabha MP Birendra Prasad Baishya, Lok Sabha MP Joseph Toppo, party working president Atul Bora (Junior), Sootea MLA Padma Hazarika, Hitendranath Goswami, Pradip Hazarika, Pulakesh Barua, Durga Das Boro and Rekha Rani Das Boro, among others, took part in the discussion, Chowdhury said.

Other sources in the party on condition of anonymity told this newspaper that the discussion held at the above venue was informal.

Prior to it, party president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta also held an informal discussion with senior leaders of the party at another city hotel around 11 am yesterday.

In this discussion, party working president Atul Bora (Junior), general secretaries Keshav Mahanta, Joseph Toppo, Utpal Dutta, Pradip Hazarika, Durga Das Boro were present, sources said, adding, the stalemate in the party over the issue of resignation of some of its central executive committee leaders is still on.
