AGP opposes Centres move on Bangla visa

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 21 The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has strongly opposed the reported move to grant exemption of visa for children and aged people of Bangladesh to visit India. The party has also demanded that India should not extend help to Bhutan to construct big dams.

In a memorandum to the President of India, the AGP said that during election campaigns, Narendra Modi had announced in the rallies that if the BJP is voted to power, all Bangladeshi nationals staying illegally in India would have to leave. But immediately after coming to power, he betrayed the people and offered entry of Bangladeshi nationals without visa. The people of Assam would resist any such move by the Government of India, the AGP said.

The AGP also opposed the Centres move to assist Bhutan in constructing mega dams as it would spell disaster for Assam. The waters of the Kurishu river dam project in Bhutan created havoc in lower Assam and construction of new dams in the neighbouring country would be disastrous for Assam, it argued.
