AGP memo to Governor over asylum move

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 19 A fifteen-member delegation of the AGP today met Governor JB Patnaik and submitted a memorandum to him opposing the State Cabinets latest decision on providing asylum or granting citizenship rights to those people who were Indian citizens at the time of partition of the country and had to leave their homes and hearths in the face of religious persecution and other discriminations.

In the memorandum, the AGP delegation alleged that both the Governments in the State and at the Centre have been indulging in an anti-Assam conspiracy with their

decisions to provide asylum or citizenship rights to those migrating to Assam on grounds of facing religious persecution at their native places. Both the Governments have resorted to such a decision only to strengthen their vote banks.

But the AGP will resist all such decisions of the State as well as the Central Government, they warned.

The party has proposed to hold a sit-in demonstration in this connection on July 21 on the bank of the Dighalipukhuri. The demonstration will start from 11 am that day, said the party in a statement.
