AGP for transparency on dam impact

By Spl CORRESPONDENT

NEW DELHI, Dec 7 Joining the anti-dam chorus, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today called for review of the sanctions given to the hydropower projects.

Making special mention in Rajya Sabha, Kumar Deepak Das urged the Ministry of Environment and Forest to revisit the clearance of the projects and maintain transparency regarding its downstream impact.

The Lohit is the source of mighty Brahmaputra River in Arunachal Pradesh and various organisations in the region have expressed concern over construction of big dams because it would affect the biodiversity, Das said.

The AGP MP, citing the large number of MoUs signed by the neighbouring State, opined that it was clear that there was no need for so much power for the region. The local people are convinced that these projects are imposed, ignoring the need to assess the social impact, without considering the fragile geology and biodiversity of the region.
