GUWAHATI, Dec 11 � Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today demanded steps to send an all-party delegation, led by the State Assembly Speaker, to Delhi for quick resolution of the Assam-Nagaland border dispute.
Moving a private member�s resolution in the State Assembly, AGP MLA Keshab Mahanta said that the Assam-Nagaland border dispute should be solved as per the recommendations of the KVK Sundaram Commission.
The Commission said that the Assam-Nagaland boundary demarcated in 1925 should be accepted as the boundary between the two States. It rejected the demand of Nagaland for transfer of Dima Hasao district to it as a baseless one. It further said that Assam should get back Dimapur, which was leased out to Nagaland in 1968. The Commission further said that Doyang Reserved Forest belonged to Assam.
At present thousands of hectares of Assam forest land are under encroachment of Nagaland. The neighbouring State has also set up two subdivisions inside Assam with the Assam State Government keeping mum over the issue.
Assam Government has leased out 3,000 bighas of land to Nagaland for setting up a seed farm, in which the Nagaland Government has put up permanent structures and the Nagaland Chief Minister had announced a Rs 1 crore grant to develop the farm, Mahanta said.
Nagaland has also been electrifying Assam areas and building roads, etc., and these works of the Government of Nagaland have been appreciated by the people living in the inter-state border areas of Assam. The Assam Government, however, has not undertaken any initiative to develop the border areas, alleged Mahanta.
