AGP dharna protests crimes against women

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, July 14 The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), including its sister wing Asom Mahila Parishad, today staged a dharna in protest against the growing crimes against women in the State including the latest incident of sexual abuse of a young woman on the GS Road and demanded the intervention of the Governor.

The Congress Government which keeps talking about securing women their rights and rightful status in society has in practice totally failed to ensure safety and security to women. This has been laid bare by the spurt in violence and crime against women in the State, it said in a statement.

The AGP said that every day several cases involving crime against women were coming to light and this exposes the total inaction and failure of the law-enforcing mechanism. The Congress Government in the State is squarely responsible for the worsening situation, and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who is also in charge of the Home Department, should own responsibility for this sorry state of affairs, it added. The protesters later met the Governor and submitted a memorandum to him, urging him to intervene in the matter.
