GUWAHATI, July 7 The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has demanded UNESCO World Heritage Site status for river island Majuli.
In a statement here today, AGP president Atul Bora said that deprivation of the river island from the World Heritage Site status has once again exposed the real nature of the State and Central governments.
Because of the listlessness of both the governments, Majuli has been facing such deprivation repeatedly. Though the Congress-led State Government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Central Government assured on several occasions that the World Heritage Site status would be wrested for the river island, again their deceit on the issue has been proved, Bora said.
He warned both the governments to refrain from indulging in cheap politics on the issue and demanded effective steps to wrest the World Heritage Site status for the island.
