AGP blames Gogoi Govt for violence

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, July 24 In view of the deteriorating law and order situation in Kokrajhar and other areas, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Tuesday demanded immediate intervention of the Centre and appealed to all section of the society to maintain peace.

Addressing mediapersons here, party president and former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said that the Tarun Gogoi Government was to be blamed for the volatile situation in Kokrajhar.

The Government had prior information that the situation would become explosive but failed to take the preventive steps, alleged Mahanta adding that the Congress Government always sought political mileage out of communal violence.

Mahanta pointed out that communal violence has been recorded whenever the Congress was in power. For the Congress, communal violence is a way to divert the attention of the people from the burning issues in the State, he said.

It needs to be mentioned here that a delegation of the party will visit the strife torn areas on July 26 and make an assessment of the loss of life and property and interact with the violence affected people taking shelter in relief camps.

The Kokrajhar violence is reflective of the inefficiency of the Tarun Gogoi government that has failed to ensure security to the common people, said Mahanta.

On the other hand, Mahanta said that security personnel have not been able to reach some of the interior villages hit by violence. He called upon the Government to deploy more security forces to bring the situation under control.
