GUWAHATI, April 12 - Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president and State Agriculture Minister Atul Bora today said that any move to grant citizenship on the basis of religion is unconstitutional and that is why the regional party was opposing it.
Addressing the media here, Bora said that the AGP was firm on its �no compromise� policy on the issue of error-free NRC and no citizenship to the illegal migrants. �We want to reiterate here that it won�t take us a second to resign from the State cabinet, if any compromise is made by the Union government on these core issues,� Bora together with State Science and Technology Minister Keshab Mahanta said.
An ally in the BJP-led government in Assam, the AGP has two cabinet berths. It needs mention here that the party is vying for two more ministerial berths in the next ministry expansion.
On the issue of delay in announcement of panchayat election in the State, he said the government was willing to hold the elections and all necessary steps were being taken at the grassroots level and also at officers level for holding the polls.
�Being in the government we are well aware of the fact that preparations are on. The elections, however, are likely to obstruct the NRC update process, a mammoth exercise under way in Assam which requires huge manpower,� he added.
On the party�s stand over simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, Bora said it was not possible in a country like India.
