Affairs, family problems cause most suicides

GUWAHATI, March 25 � Love affairs and family problems account for the highest number of suicides in Assam.

As per latest official numbers, love affairs were the cause of 1,634 incidences of suicides and family problems were the reason for another 1,640 cases in the State between 2009 and 2012.

During the four-year period, there were a total of 11,949 incidents of suicides in Assam, including 2,993 in 2009, 2,993 in 2010, 2,726 in 2011 and 3,264 in 2012.

Besides love affairs and family problems, bankruptcy or sudden change in economic status accounted for 51 suicides during the four-year period while illness caused 1,182 others.

Death of a dear person was the reason for 125 incidents of suicide, dowry dispute for 48, drug abuse or addiction for 99, failure in examination for 592, fall in social reputation for 138, poverty for 787, property dispute for 830, unemployment for 230, and 1,158 suicides for other causes. The causes in case of 3,435 incidents of suicides during this period were not known. Among the total incidents, 8,126 involved males and 3,823 females.

The highest instances of suicides were among people in the age group of 15-29 years (4,537), followed by people in 30-44 years age group (4,421), 45-59 years (2,493), above 60 years (298) and up to 14 years (200).

The data for 2013 will be out next year.
