HAILAKANDI, July 11 - The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed in Hailakandi district under the auspices of the Mahkuma Prohibition Committee recently.

A meeting was held on the occasion at the Public Higher Secondary School here. It was presided over by the chairman of the committee and principal of the school, Sirajul Islam Majharbhuiya and was addressed by the Additional Chief Medical and Health Officer of Hailakandi, Dr Umesh Phangchu, prohibition organiser Hafij Abul Hussain Barbhuiya and Manjur Ali Barbhuiya among others.

All the speakers highlighted the adverse effects of drugs and alcohol and urged the people to keep away from these substances. They also elaborated on the purpose of observing the day across the world. They held the view that the present day society is not aware of the menace of drug and alcohol, and stressed the need of more awareness generation.

A rally was also taken out on the occasion in the main thoroughfares of the town in collaboration with the police.
