Advanced surgery performed

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 18 Dr Arup Kumar Nath, consultant urologist at the city-based Down Town Hospital recently performed an advanced laparoscopic surgery.

A male patient aged 54 years came to the hospital with symptoms like passage of blood in urine and ultrasonography and CT scan showed a kidney tumour of 5 cm size arising from the lower part of right kidney.

The tumour was confined to the kidney and spread to other parts of the body was not detected. The usual treatment for such kind of tumour is removal of the entire kidney with the tumour and leaving the patient with only one kidney. With advancement of the investigation and surgical technique the removal of the only tumour with a tumour free margin for such small tumour in the kidney is possible now-a-days with safety for the patient, said the statement.

This type of operation can be performed laparoscopically with equal safety and effectively and the procedure is called laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. This is most technically demanding and needs lots of laparoscopic expertise and currently performed by a very few advanced laparoscopic centers in India, it said. Dr Nath and his team of doctors successfully performed this advanced surgery in Down Town Hospital and the patient had smooth post-operative recovery.
