Advanced heart surgery carried out

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 1 A team of heart surgeons of Guwahati Neurological Research Centre (GNRC) successfully carried out an advanced heart surgery called Ascending-to-Descending aortic bypass for Coarctation of the aorta on a 21-year-old patient from Dhubri district.

The patient was suffering for long as the main blood vessel carrying oxygen-rich blood from the left ventricle of the heart to all of the organs of the body was very narrow. The team of doctors employed a novel technique and repaired his aorta with an artificial synthetic graft and made a new route for the blood to flow to the lower half of the body.

The entire procedure took nearly five hours, it said in a statement, adding that there are only a few heart-care centres in India which are successfully handling such surgeries.

The GNRC is the first heart institute in north-eastern India to achieve this feat.

The team of experts included heart surgeons Dr Sunil Dawka, Dr Bikash Rai Das, and supporting members including Dr Prasanta Borah, Dr Anup Jyoti Dutta and Srinivas Rao.
