SHILLONG, Aug 22 - The Centre has sanctioned an additional battalion of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for the North East, the other such battalion being sanctioned in the country is in Prime Minister Narendra Modis constituency, Benaras.

Union Minister of State, Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju informed here yesterday the sanction of the battalion was made in view of the geographical conditions of the region.

He said now the region would have two NDRF battalions. One of the battalions would be stationed in Guwahati and the new battalion would be stationed in Arunachal Pradesh, at a yet to be identified location.

The NDRF battalion at Guwahati would be responding to any disasters in Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura. The battalion at Arunachal Pradesh would operate in Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram, he informed.

The region has been sanctioned the additional NDRF battalion as it falls under a high seismic zone. Moreover, annual flood in the NE has also been a concern.

The Union Minister said the Centre is in the process of equipping the NDRF battalions in the country with modern technologies. We are constantly trying to upgrade the NDRF battalions with modern technologies, he said.

Rijiju, who rushed from here early on Friday, went to Upper Assam and then to Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh to take stock of the flood in these areas. The paramilitary forces and the NDRF team have been put on high alert and are ready to assist the people during the flood, he said.
