ADC member killed in Manipur ambush

IMPHAL, July 12 � A member of Autonomous District Council (ADC) in Manipur hills was killed while his nephew and driver sustained critical injury in an ambush carried out by suspected militants in Ukhrul district today morning.

The incident took place near Finch Corner area, 65 km from Imphal on the Imphal-Ukhrul Highway under Shangshak police station. ADC member Ngalangzar Malue (65) was on his way to see his ailing mother at his native Nongman village under Phungyar sub-division around 11.30 am, sources said.

Malue�s 22 year-old nephew Rataini and the driver of the hired Maruti van (MN 01 K 3962) sustained serious injuries in the ambush.

On hearing the news, police teams from nearby police stations of Litan, Shangshak and Ukhrul besides Assam Rifles personnel rushed to the spot and conducted a search operation to nab the attackers.

The injured persons have been rushed to Imphal while the body of the ADC member has been sent to JNIMS mortuary for autopsy, police said. Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam has strongly condemned the incident. Security forces have been alerted to nab the attackers.

Meanwhile, six persons including a six year-old boy sustained injuries in a bomb explosion at Langthabal Kunja Mayai Leikai, near here on the busy Indo-Myanmar Highway around 9.30 am today.

The blast took place by the road side hitting a passing auto-rickshaw injuring six passengers. They were rushed to RIMS hospital for treatment. The condition of one Leibakmacha and his grandson are said to be critical while the others are out of danger.

Mini Secretariat: Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh today inaugurated the Mini Secretariat building at Chandel district headquarters.

Newmai News adds: The blast had occurred minutes after two Assam Rifles trucks had passed the spot. The reports further said that the Chief Minister�s convoy had also passed through the spot some 15 minutes before the blast.

According to the reports, the suspected militants used a remote control to trigger the IED.
