Action against schools, hospitals likely

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 28 Axe is likely to fall on a number of educational institutions and hospitals located in Guwahati for not adhering to the prescribed guidelines even after repeated notices being served on them by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC).

As far as schools are concerned, the Corporation has now referred the matter to the State Education department for ardent and necessary action, which, if sources are to be believed, could even amount to partially sealing of the schools.

A source in the GMC told this reporter that it is contemplating to partially seal the schools failing to adhere to the prescribed norms. The source named some of the schools, which include Pragjyotish School, Blue Bird Public School, YWCA School and Little Star School.

Apart from the schools, the sources further stated that the GMC also plans to undertake a demolition drive against all such buildings, including hospitals, starting initially from the busy GS Road who have misused their parking lots for commercial benefits.

Besides the schools and hospitals, the list includes public buildings to shopping malls which have been found to flaunt basic norms set by the GMC and the GMDA.

It needs mention that even after a series of notices, the GMC has failed to achieve the required co-operation from the erring organisations.

A recent survey conducted by the GMC had found 44 hospitals in and around the city to be unsafe for patients. The GMC had also found out that 33 schools in Guwahati were found to be violating basic standards needed to obtain before constructing a school.
