ACLP urges Speaker to hold spl Assembly session

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 4 - A seven-member delegation of the Assam Congress Legislature Party led by Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia today met Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly Hitendra Nath Goswami and demanded that a special session of the House be convened immediately to debate the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and, if required, adopt a resolution to safeguard the provisions of the Assam Accord 1985.

Saikia told the Speaker that in recent times he has been calling for a special session of the Assam Legislative Assembly to discuss the issue but to no avail, said a statement.

He handed over to the Speaker a copy of a memorandum submitted to him jointly by the Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill and the Left-Democratic Manch Assam which requested the Opposition leader to take the initiative to ensure that a special session of the House was held to discuss this important issue.

Saikia pointed out that the people of Assam are disillusioned and angry because they have realised that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is a ploy by the government to nullify the Assam Accord.

He said that it is the Speakers duty to appreciate the gravity of the issue and immediately convene a special session of the House so that the representatives of the people of Assam can protect the States interests.

Goswami, on his part, assured the Congress delegation that he would consider the matter.
