DIMAPUR, Oct 12 � Nagaland Governor PB Acharya on Thursday met bankers of Nagaland at Raj Bhavan in Kohima to review the progress made under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) Scheme and construction of toilets as instructed by him in their earlier meeting held a month earlier.
A press release issued by Lead Bank Kohima chief manager, Lanuteka Imchen stated that the Governor, during the meeting on October 9, expressed concern over the slow progress in opening of accounts under PMJDY Scheme and directed all banks to give utmost importance to opening of accounts. He also asked them to give him weekly progress reports till January 2015, the release stated.
The Governor is also said to have directed the banks to construct at least one toilet before the end of November or beginning of December 2014. State Bank of India, being the Lead Bank, has been requested to construct 20 toilets before January 26, 2015. He also expects a minimum of 30-35 toilets constructed during the same period. He advised the banks to construct the toilets in public places, particularly in places where more women come for marketing.
He advised bankers to request the land-owners to donate land, convincing them that the toilets are meant for their use. He also directed the banks to submit fortnightly progress report to him regarding this.
The release also stated that the Governor has directed all banks to take up cleanliness drive, starting from their respective bank branches and localities as part of Swachh Bharat. He insisted that the cleanliness drive should not be symbolic but adopted as a permanent feature.
The Governor directed all the banks operating in Nagaland to utilise two per cent of their net profit for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and utilise it for the welfare of the people in the State. He also expressed concern that some banks in the State are there only to collect deposits and do not participate in the development of the State. In this regard, he requested all banks to utilise the money in Nagaland for the welfare of the people and for the development of the State. He also advised the banks to utilise half of the two per cent net profit in empowerment of education such as sponsoring of poor students, maintaining of government school buildings, etc.
Bankers from SBI, UCO Bank, Nagaland Rural Bank, Indusind Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Vijaya Bank, Bank of Baroda, Punjab & Sind Bank and Bank of India attended the meeting.
