Academician Pranab Phukan passes away

DOOMDOOMA, May 17 - Pranab Phukan, a noted social activist, academician, journalist and writer of Phillobari near here, passed away on May 13 at the Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh. He was 78 and was suffering from respiratory disease. He leaves behind his wife and two sons besides a host of relatives.

At his initiative, Arunudoy High School was set up in 1979. Phukan retired from Arunudoy High School as the headmaster when the school was in the venture stage. He tried his best to spread education among the people of this interior region of Tinsukia district.

He was elected president of the Gabharubheti Gaon Panchayat and was also the chairman of the Gabharubheti Cooperative Society Limited.

A life member of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, Phukan was awarded by the State government for his book Amar Gaon in 1978. He also published a collection of poems, while hundreds of his writings were published in various newspapers and magazines. He was closely associated with various socio-cultural organisations of Phillobari.

Many people including Doomdooma MLA Durga Bhumij, and several organisations have mourned his death.
